The lot features a late-19th century Southern Plains Mountain Lion bowcase quiver. The piece is comprised of Indian tanned Mountain Lion hide being thread sewn showing a wooden dowl inserted for support. The piece shows a wide shoulder strap which has separated at some point but is still present. The Mountain Lion / Cougar fur has been sun-faded with age to a lighter tan / white with some of the brown coloring still present in the folds. The hide is still fairly soft with with some slightly stiff spots, a few worn fur and rips, but mainly well kept. All the hides have remnants of the Mountain Lion fur still attached, a documented feature in quiver bow cases amongst the Comanche, Apache, Southern Cheyenne, and Ute. This example is very similar to the 19th Century Comanche Bow case and Quiver in Mountain Lion which shows the hair on hide, with very little embellishment from the Gary Shansby and Mike Walsh Collections sold by Hindman in September 2023 for $19,500 (w/ bp) and the 19th C. Southern Plains Mountain Lion Quiver from the Donald Spaulding (2026-2021) collection sold by North American Auciton in November 2023 for $4,160 (shown w/ bp). There are a few old and later repairs and preservations and overall the piece displays well. Truly a fantastic late Indian Wars era / early Reservation era Southern Plains example, possibly from the Comanche who were known to have little embellishment on their war regalia. The piece measures 34-inches tall by 25-inches wide.
