The lot features an 1800’s percussion cap exposed side hammer musket rifle with wrappings and tacks attributed to the San Carlos Apache Native American Indians of Arizona, known as an Indian Blanket Gun. These types of shotgun, musket, and rifles with cut-down barrels, and shortened stocks are referred to by collectors as “blanket rifles” or “blanket guns”. These were aptly named as they were shortened to fit under a wagon blanket, saddle blanket, wearing blanket / pancho or other covering to remain hidden until needed. This example is from the 19th Century showing a half-stock musket with octagonal barrel and overall measuring 29 ½ inches in length. The push rod is long gone, but the guns action appears to somewhat function but will no longer stay cocked. The stock has a deep patina and shows old brass tacking adornments in symbolic patterns on both sides as well as old wraps of Indian buckskin hide on the gripping area of the stock and the barrel end. This gun was said to have been collected at the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation in Southeastern Arizona. The end of the cut down butt stock shows heavy hot file rasp burnings as well as the word “TARRO” punch stamped into it in large individual letters. There was an Apache Indian named Tarro who was a registered member of the San Carlos tribe in the late 19th Century, but without proper documentation or collection history, we cannot accurately say that it can be confirmed as belonging to him. Truly a terrific blanket rifle with fine patina. The tacking could likely be a later addition to the piece, but this is unknown. Provenance: Form the ex Tom Hardy collection. Antique Firearm does NOT require an FFL or background check.
