Presented in this lot is an Antique 19th Century Banded Camel Back Dome Steamer Travel Trunk, circa 1890s to 1910s. This trunk features a textured body of embossed sheet metal showcasing a repeating floral and vine motif. The domed lid and panels are reinforced with thick horizontal and vertical hardwood slats secured by decorative cast metal clamps. The trunk is fitted with heavy iron hardware, including a central locking mechanism, center mounted padlock latch, dual outer latches, and protective corner brackets. Leather hand straps are attached on the sides. The interior of the truck shows a wooden frame, the underside of the lid displays a lithograph of the USS Olympia, the flagship of Commodore George Dewey during the Battle of Manila Bay in the Spanish American War in 1898. The sides and floor show remnants of newspaper covering. Steamer trunks, popular from the mid-1800s to early 1900s, were durable, low-profile luggage designed for steamship and train travel, or stagecoach, and later became popular for storing belongings during boarding school stays. The steamer trunk is in preserved condition, rear corner hinge broken, central lock not functional. Interior fitted with side shelves for hanging a removable tray (tray missing). The exterior embossed metal exhibits a dark, naturally oxidized patina with scattered surface rust, minor dents, and general finish wear. The wooden slats show typical scuffs, minor splintering, and weathering consistent with travel use. The steamer trunk is in preserved condition consistent with age and normal use.
