This is a fantastic Northern Plains stone buffalo pemmican pounder from the mid-1800's of the Indian Wars era from an ex-museum and fine Native American private Eastern Montana Collection. The club exhibits a stone wrapped in a bent wood branch held into place with parfleche rawhide thick Buffalo / Bison hide with sinew rawhide lace sewing. The stone has a smooth worked face and rich dark patina from honest use and age. These stone maul or hammer clubs were used as stone hammers to pound dried chokecherries and buffalo / bison jerky / meat into a powder which had suet added making pemmican as well as meat tenderizing. Sometimes these pounding hammers were also used to break buffalo bones (and other animals) to extract marrow or to smash skulls for removing the brains for tanning hides, i.e. brain tanning. Provenance: From a private ex-museum and fine a Native American collection from Eastern Montana. Measures overall 11.75-inches long with the head being about 3.5” by 3.25” by 3.5”.
