This is a fabulous, authentic 19th-century Plains / Prairie Grizzly Bear Claw beaded necklace from the ex-collection of Bruce Johnson, Mystic Warriors and Hindman-Freeman's auction. The lot is comprised of five Grizzly Bear Claws strung on Indian tanned hide with a red ocher mineral pigment coloring. The necklace is further adorned with various multicolored glass trade beads, elk i.v.o.r.y. molar tooth with rich deep coloring, 1830-1840’s brass button marked Best Double Gilt, mid-1800’s brass buttons, solid brass trade hawk bell, cavalry bugle brass military uniform button, turquoise stone, spiny oyster shell, petrified tooth, and carved tooth. Two of the bear claws are drilled near the center a second time. The beads include various skunk and chief beads of the 1800’s and 1700’s period. Provenance: From the ex collection of Bruce Johnson of Mystic Warriors; found to be an authentic Plains Bear Claw Necklace from the 19th-century from the experts at Hindman Freeman auctions from their September 2024 sale with the original Hindman tag included. The necklace is about 20-inches in circumference, largest bear claw is 2 5/8-inches in length.
