The lot features a 19th Century bowcase and quiver from the Sioux Indians of the Plains with an old, collection tag attached. The tag reads, “A-47 Hunkpapa Sioux Mid 19th Century Brain tanned hide / tepee canvas / red trade wool / From Ranch Coll. Near Devils Tower, Wyo.” on one side and, “A-47 Hunkpapa Sioux Quiver + Bow Case with 3 Old Arrows + Bow, (Original) Spotted Horse Wyoming.” The set shows a bowcase and arrow quiver paired with an early bow and three original arrows. The arrow quiver exhibits thick Buffalo / Bison Indian tanned hide which was originally sinew sewn and shows a large Indian repair, likely from the early 1900’s still yet, comprised of Indian tanned buckskin and trade thread. The quiver has a section of beadwork done on trade canvas in classic Sioux geometric pattern with large triangle and horse or buffalo tracks with all 19th Century glass trade seed beads in colors of chalk white, red white heart, greasy green, blue and greasy violet (and a small amount of faceted brass metal seed beads). The top of the quiver has trade thread sewn red trade clothe and the bottom old Indian tanned hide fringes which are stiffened. The piece has the original thick shoulder strap of Indian tanned hide and the bowcase is tied on. The bowcase or bow case is comprised of old trade canvas muslin clothe with the end covered in old red stroud trade wool with a string of wound glass pony beads in blue white hears, white, and chevrons. The front of the bag shows later fringes with larger exotic trade beads, wound cobalts, skunks in black and white and a red white heart spotted skunk bead. The set includes three old 19th Century arrows with sinew tied remnants of turkey feather fletching, red ocher pigment paints and two having sinew tied sheet iron arrowheads, one has the arrowhead end broken off. There is an old bow which is carved from solid wood in classic Northern Plains fashion with expertly carved notches on each end and showing black, green, yellow, red mineral pigment paints, and overall having a rich deep patina from honest use. The bowcase and quiver have been repaired over the years, mostly appear to be older to vintage Indian repairs with the trade beads presumably being a old to vintage addition. Provenance: Tag marks this as being an old Ranch Collection from Spotted Horse Wyoming near Devils Tower, listed by the experts as Jackson’s and found to be a 19th Century Plains example. Overall measures 51.5”W by approx.. 38”H. Bow measures 47.25”L. Longest arrow is 25.75”L.
