The lot features a 19th-Century Southern Plains lance spear with paperwork from Mystic Warriors of Bruce and Ilene Johnson and from the collection of Stephen Johnston. The piece comes with written paperwork from Mystic Warriors from 2015 referred to as, “S. Plains lance, circa 1890’s” which sold for $8,500 (in 2015). The piece shows a hand-blacksmith forged spontoon lance / spear head of an early pattern showing a widening belly with median ridge running down the center of both sides of the double edge blade. The blade is secured to the wood haft handle which has been wrapped in a late-19th-century U.S.A. flag and secured with strips of sinew. The top shows red stroud and flag strip fringes. A beautiful example that is well kept. Provenance: From the Stephen Johnston collection formerly from Darby, Montana and Foster City, CA; purchased in 2015 by Stephen Johnston from Bruce and Ilene Johnson Mystic Warriors Evergreen, Colorado with a printed copy of the receipt which show the piece as being a Southern Plains Lance circa 1890’s and sold for $8,500. Measures 57.25”L and the visible head is 9”L by approx.. 1”W.
