For your consideration is this 1934 1st edition of "Glory Hunter - A Life of General Custer" by Frederic F. Van De Water, published by The Bobbs-Merrill Company and copy-righted by the author. The book follows the short life of General George Custer from the US Civil War and detailing the Battle of the Little Bighorn, how the Native Americans were treated during the time of General Custer. "Glory Hunter" is an excellent addition to the history of the Civil War and focuses on the little known cavalry battle at Trevelian Station in Virgina. it gives a good look into the tactical abilities (or lack thereof) and attitudes of the famously brash boy-general, George A Custer. The battle of Trevelian Station was the largest all-cavalry battle of the Civil War and was part of the Union strategy to capture Richmond. As the title of the book suggests, Custer was always chasing glory, both for himself and the forces under his command. Sometimes he was quite successful. At Trevelian he thought he saw an opportunity to capture a Rebel supply wagon train but overlooked the fact that this venture could put him in a bad fix. His efforts got him surrounded by Rebel forces and almost cooked his goose. Other units came to his rescue and extracted him from the dire predicament he got into. He never acknowledged his lucky salvation by others. A historical marker at the site today has the heading "Custer's First Last Stand". Luther High Spot 2 says "This book was written during the era when debunking was popular and pictures Custer in as unfavorable a light as possible in all situations. Van de Water writes in a bold and vigorous style. The contents so enraged General Hugh S. Johnson sufficiently to draw forth such comments as 'Adverse advocacy,' 'mere muckraking,' 'sounds like the musings of a daisy-crunching doughboy." This is not only a detailed and well-written biography, but it is also a fine psychological study of the controversial Custer. Well worth reading!
