Included in this lot is an Original First Edition of, "Butte, Above and Below Ground", 1900, by Harry C. Freeman, The Henry O. Shepard Company Chicago, publishers. "A brief history of Butte, Montana The World's Greatest Mining Camp Including a Story of the Extracation and Treatment of Ores from its Gigantic Copper Properties". Illustrated. This important publication sheds a bright light on one of the most important mining areas in the history of The West. Together with his insights, as well as rare photographs of the periods, Harry Freeman describes Butte and its vicinity from its early beginnings, right up to its flush years when copper flowed from its mines like a river. At the time of publication, Butte, Montana was known worldwide as “The Richest Mining Spot On Earth” and produced not only vast amounts of copper, but also silver, gold and other metals from its mines. Freeman illustrates, with great detail, the most important mines in the vicinity of Butte, providing rare details on their owners, their history and most importantly, how the mines operated and how their treasures were extracted. Of particular interest are the dozens of rare photographs that depict mines such as the famous Anaconda, the Silver Bow, the Smoke House, Moose, Paulin, Buffalo, Little Minah, the Mountain Consolidated, West Greyrock, Cora, the Green Mountain, Diamond, Bell, Parnell, the Neversweat, Nipper, Original and many others. Book includes plates of four Charles Russell paintings among the many illustrations. This brown cloth bound, stamped hardcover is in very nice condition, front cover stamped illustration of miners underground. Intact pages are very clean, slight age tanning.
