Salesman's Samples or dummy books, which have also been called "blads" were used by the itinerant agents of subscription publishers to entice customers to agree to purchase a copy of a work in advance of delivery. This Salesman's Sample has listings of original subscribers in the rear of the book. This book is by the same author of "Military and Civil Life of U.S. Grant" and "Life of Sheridan". A stirring biography of the larger than life general and statesman. William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891) was an American soldier, businessman, educator, and author. He served as a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War, achieving recognition for his command of military strategy as well as criticism for the harshness of the scorched-earth policies that he implemented against the Confederate States. He steadfastly refused to be drawn into party politics and in 1875 published his memoirs, which became one of the best-known first-hand accounts of the Civil War. The burgundy cloth bound gold gilt stamped illustrated hardcover is in nice condition, slight scuffing exhibited on covers. Intact pages exhibit age tanning and foxing. Measures 5.5"W x 8"L x .5"L.
