Offered in this lot is a 1st edition of "Marvels of the New West" written by William M. Thayer (1820-1898) and published in 1888. The book is a fantastic and comprehensive description of lands and people west of the Missouri river. The book contains over three hundred fifty engravings and maps. The book is a collection of "six books in one,” comprised of “Marvels of Nature”, “Marvels of Race”, “Marvels of Enterprise”, “Marvels of Mining”, “Marvels of Stock-raising", and “Marvels of Agriculture”. Thayer was editor of the Boston Home Monthly Magazine, 1858-62; of the Nation, 1864- 68; and of the Mother's Assistant, 1868-72. He was secretary of the Massachusetts Temper- ance alliance, 1860-76, and a trustee of Dean academy, Franklin, Mass., 1890-98. He is the author of many juvenile stories, 1852-59, and was the first to introduce the conversational style in biographical writing, as illustrated in the White House series and here, Marvels of the New West.
The book shows good overall condition and light wear on the green cloth cover which has gilt lettering on the spine and front, gilt coloured ancient cliff-dweller house image on cover and gilt coloured Old Faithful Geyser image erupting, fore-edge painting . The book measures 9.75"L x 6.5W" x 2"D.
