The book is a comprehensive collection of 200+ black and white illustrations showcasing Frederic Remington's detailed depictions of the American West, from Native Americans to cowboys and the US Army cavalry with commentary by Owen Wister, as well as a biography and account of Remington's work, edited by Marta Jackson. Frederic Remington and Owen Wister were iconic collaborators whose combined work defined the popular image of the American West in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. While Wister wrote the stories and verses, Remington provided the detailed illustrations of cowboys, Native Americans, and the cavalry. The illustrations are separated in thirteen categories, including "He Knew Horses", “Football, Fishing and Hunting", People", "Bull Fighting", "Architectural Studies and Landscapes", "Animals in the Wilds", "Cavalry", "Soldiery Artillery", "Fighting the Indians", "Cowboys and Vaqueros", "Men in the Wilderness", and "The Indian".
