Featured in this lot is this 2 1/4" Pre Columbian Hohokam celt/pestal/utensil circa 300BCE - 1500CE. The celt is wonderfully and professionally crafted construction that shows a polished sleek design that shows dark coloration with faded demeanor to the sides like it was used more as a pestal that a cutting utensil. Hohokam was a culture in the North American Southwest in what is now part of Arizona, United States, and Sonora, Mexico. It existed between 300 and 1500 CE, with cultural precursors possibly as early as 300 BCE. The condition of this this celt utensil is well preserved with some fading to the material and some small chips to the bladed end of the celt but is otherwise well preserved. The measurements of this celt utensil is 2 1/4" x 1 1/4" x 5/8". Provenance: the Owen D. Mort, Jr. Collection. Owen David Mort was an American engineer who amassed an impressive collection throughout his worldwide travels. His collection has included art, artifacts and other historical items from which he has donated to museums at the University of Utah and the Snite Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame, including African, Afghan and Asian artifacts.
