Presented in this lot are three (3) circa 200 BC - 200 AD Parthian Glazed Earthenware pieces including a single handle pitcher with lid, a single handle pedestal drinking cup, and a double handle bowl with lid from Khwaja Khanum, Afghanistan, procured 1969-1971. Provenance: the Owen D. Mort, Jr. Collection. Owen David Mort was an American engineer who amassed an impressive collection throughout his worldwide travels. His collection has included art, artifacts and other historical items from which he has donated to museums at the University of Utah and the Snite Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame. Donations also include African, Afghan and Asian artifacts. Khwaja Khanum is located in the northeast area of Afghanistan, inside the Kushan empire, which from approximately 200 B.C. until 200 A.D. was the furthest east Hellenistic-Greek state. As such, Hellenistic culture greatly influenced the art and culture. In amazingly preserved conditions, the pieces appear to have been created as a set or part of a set. The pieces exhibit a linked symmetry of construction evident in the shape of the handles, the shape of the rims and the overall consistent colour. The pitcher measures 9.5"H x 9.5"L x 6.25"W with lid; cup is 5.5"L x 3.75"W x 4.5"H; bowl is 10.5"L x 7.75"W x 5.5"H with lid. Total weight is 5lb, 12oz.
