Featured in this lot is this 3 1/2" Hopewell plateform pipe circa woodland period collected around 1890 - 1910. The pipe features a wonderfully and professionally crafted light brown and off white speckled steatite material that features a traditional platform pipe design with a winged platform and a hole worked into one of the sides of the platform and shows a cylindrical central bowl that is hand drilled out. The Hopewell tradition describes the common aspects of an ancient pre-Columbian Native American civilization that flourished in settlements along rivers in the northeastern and Midwestern Eastern Woodlands from 100 BCE to 500 CE, in the Middle Woodland period. The Hopewell were named for Capt. Mordecai Hopewell, who owned the farm where part of an extensive earthwork site was excavated in 1891. The condition of this Hopewell pipe is preserved with a horizontal repair to the pipe bowl but otherwise is in preserved condition. The measurements of this Hopewell pipe is 2 1/4" x 3 1/2" x 1 1/4". The collective weight of this Hopewell pipe is U6oz.
