Featured in this lot is this 4 5/8" Pre Columbian Woodland Period hand axe circa 1000BCE - 1000CE. The hand axe is wonderfully and professionally crafted beige chert material construction that shows a thick body for a hand grip and a graduated body for easy ergonomics with a polished and sharpened wide edge on the cutting edge. The Woodland period of North American pre-Columbian cultures lasted from roughly 1000 BCE to 1000 CE. The term was coined in the 1930s and refers to prehistoric sites between the Archaic period and the Mississippian cultures. The Adena culture and the ensuing Hopewell tradition during this period built monumental earthwork architecture and established continent-spanning trade and exchange networks. The condition of this hand axe shows a well preserved condition that shows well formed sides and effectiveness in the tool with no major dings to the blade of the tool but some small ones. The measurements of this hand axe is 4 5/8" x 1 3/4" x 1". Provenance: the Owen D. Mort, Jr. Collection. Owen David Mort was an American engineer who amassed an impressive collection throughout his worldwide travels. His collection has included art, artifacts and other historical items from which he has donated to museums at the University of Utah and the Snite Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame, including African, Afghan and Asian artifacts.
