Featured in this lot is this 54lb 14oz Wyoming Obsidian Bluffs natural obsidian collected 20th century. The sample features a wonderfully and professionally collected sample of natural obsidian with mineral deposit along the top and shows a striking deep black obsidian coloration to the valuable rock with stripes of grey and rough pores to the sides of the cut stone. obsidian, igneous rock occurring as a natural glass formed by the rapid cooling of viscous lava from volcanoes. Obsidian is extremely rich in silica (about 65 to 80 percent), is low in water, and has a chemical composition similar to rhyolite. Obsidian has a glassy lustre and is slightly harder than window glass. The condition of this sample of obsidian is well preserved with no obvious signs of damage and shows good overall condition.
