Featured in this lot is this 6 3/4" Pre Columbian Woodland Era Plow/Celt/Axe Head circa 1000BCE -1000CE. The utensil is wonderfully and professionally crafted red beige chert material that shows a knapped design of craftsmanship and is semi polished with a sharp wider end for the axe head and is rounded on the other end that is knapped to a sharp edge. This axe head is marked 02.13. The Woodland period of North American pre-Columbian cultures lasted from roughly 1000 BCE to 1000 CE. The term was coined in the 1930s and refers to prehistoric sites between the Archaic period and the Mississippian cultures. The condition of this axe head shows a well preserved condition with a medium size chip in the bottom of the axe blade but otherwise is well preserved. The measurements of this 6 3/4" x 2 5/8" x 1 1/8". Provenance: the Owen D. Mort, Jr. Collection. Owen David Mort was an American engineer who amassed an impressive collection throughout his worldwide travels. His collection has included art, artifacts and other historical items from which he has donated to museums at the University of Utah and the Snite Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame, including Native American, Pre Columbian, African, Afghan and Asian artifacts.
