For your consideration is this rare, fourth edition of, "A Complete Course of Geography, By Means of Instructive Games" by Abbé Gaultier and published in London in 1800. This early educational work teaches geography using interactive games, making it one of the first examples of game-based learning. Designed to interest young learners, the book is divided into two sections: the first contains a simple geography game that teaches the names and locations of numerous countries and regions, and the second contains a geographical game that ties geography to ancient and modern history. The book is dedicated to Lady Amelia Spencer, the Duke of Marlborough's youngest daughter, strengthening its relationship with aristocratic education. Gaultier's revolutionary teaching style, which stressed learning via play, gained widespread traction, making this work an essential piece of early educational literature. This volume has been beautifully rebound in full red leather, featuring gilt ruling and decorative floral borders on the covers. The spine is adorned with raised bands and gilt lettering. The pages display expected age toning and light foxing, consistent with a book over two centuries old, but remain clear and well-preserved. The title page is bold and legible, as well as the bilingual dedication to Lady Amelia Spencer in both English and French. The book shows good condition overall with wear present from its age and use over the years, but no major or obvious signs of damage is noted. It measures 15" L x 9 7/8" W x 3/4" D and weighs 1 pound and 14 ounces.
