An exceptional, burl maple Gun Stock War Club from the Eastern Plains dating to circa 1865-1870 from the ex-collection of Harry Thomas and private Santa Fe collection. This beautiful example is carved from solid maple with highly figure grain and burl in a classic gunstock / gun stock pattern having a carved or incised serrated zig-zag pattern at the top of the club with file branded adornment. Set into the front of the club with poured pewter or bullet led is a fine upper Missouri pattern metal spontoon lance blade which exhibits blacksmith forging having a single notch on either side and median ridge running down the center. The gripping area is cut in and has a slightly more worn, darker appearance. There are two pierced, crudely drilled holes at the bottom of the club. Provenance: From the ex-collection of Harry Thomas and a private Santa Fe collection. Truly a fine, authentic gunstock from the Indian Wars era with presentation quality being well kept and from a good collection. Measures overall 30 ¾-inches long by approx.. 12 ½-inches wide. The blade protrudes 6-inches from the stock.
