Offered in this lot is a large Acoma seed jar by Cletus Victorino. Cletus learned from his mother Sandra Victorino, the painting is extremely precise. The Acoma people have maintained their cultural identity, resisting the influence of outsiders. Victorino and his family are among a few families living a traditional Acoma life on the Mesa. Acoma families living on the mesa reside in pueblos, some dating back to 1100 AD. This Hopi Pottery Jar is handmade of natural clay indigenous to the area and decorated using mineral stone paint. This wonderful jar's design is bold polychrome geometric motifs on a white burnished slip glaze. On the top (face) of the jar is a bird. The jar measures 5 1/2" tall and 23" around, with a 1" opening. The jar is signed on the bottom C. Victorino Acoma NM. The jar is in good condition, with two "marks" on the bird and light wear around the wide point.
