This lot features a direct mail advertising booklet from the publishing company, Brown & Bigelow, titled "Lawson Wood's Monkey Business" and dated 1958-59, as seen on the spiral booklet spine. Lawson Wood was a British painter, illustrator, and designer known for his comical depictions of animals, policeman, cavemen, and dinosaurs. His most famous character was Gran’pop, a ginger-haired ape. The popularity extended to merchandise, such as pottery, calendars, postcards, cigarette cards, and direct mail advertising. Peppin and Micklethwait, authors of the "Dictionary of British Book Illustrators, the Twentieth Century", cite Percy Bradshaw as saying Wood had a "breadth, ease and fluency which many an infinitely more serious artist must envy". Included are vintage "Topics of the Tropics" advertising direct mail pamphlets featuring illustrations of cartoon animals, including the famous Gran'pop. The front displays a full color cartoon and inside is an illustrated “Topics of the Tropics” newsletter full of humorous local "news". This is in great vintage condition and measures 7" L x 6" W when folded. Six have varied companies' advertising and six are sample advertising blanks. Also included are twelve advertising legal size blotters featuring the cartoons, with six having varied companies advertising and six are sample advertising blanks. These measure 9" H x 4" W. Also included are three companies' envelope size blotters that measure 6.25" L x 3.25" W. Three advertising postcards that measure 5.5" H x 3.5" W are also included. Lastly are two sample "Easy-To-Use Direct Mail Copy" letters, one "Plated Ad Copy" pamphlet, two unused Brown & Bigelow return envelopes, and one advertising "how to" pamphlet. All items are in near mint condition. The booklet overall measurements 10.5" H x 7" W x .75" D approximately.
