Featured in this lot is a framed lithograph of Joe Rosenthal's "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima", the iconic, Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph of six United States Marines raising the U.S. flag atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima in the final stages of the Pacific War including a personalized card from the photographer Joe Rosenthal The rear of the frame has a commemorative letter to the photo's recipient addressed in "memo" form the San Francisco Chronicle, the newspaper for whom Joe Rosenthal worked as a photographer for 35 years after the war. The "memo" mentions that the photo is going to be used for the Seventh War Loan Drive (war bond drive that ran from May 14 to June 30, 1945) which became the most successful of all the war bond drives in World War II. The signed personalized business card from Joe Rosenthal reads, "Kindest regards to Cheryl from Joe Rosenthal"; Cheryl is the consignor of this lithograph. The business card is from when Rosenthal worked for the San Francisco Chronicle as "staff photographer" and is dated 8/28/57, with his phone number printed as GArfield 1-1112. The lithograph has Joe Rosenthal's signature, "Photograph by Joe Rosenthal, A. P." on the lower left directly behind the last Marine. "Lithographed in U. S. A. by Schwabacher-Frey" printed on bottom left. This lithograph is a colorized version of the photograph and is centered on the page and framed by wide unprinted margins. "Marines Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima" is printed in small text at lower right. This lithograph is in good overall condition with aged tanning throughout, but no other obvious marring noted. Wood frame glass is broken on lower left corner, gold gilt frame edges exhibit very slight scuffing, no other obvious marring noted. Visible art measures 10.75"W x 13.75"L, and the frame is 12"W x 15"L x .5"D.*
