Featured in this lot is this Alan Hope yellow cedar thunderbird totem circa late 1900s. In the majority of Native American cultures, ravens play an important role. It is revered as both a trickster figure and the source of light. The raven represents the ultimate creator of everything that existed before the beginning since it is the creator of light. The raven is regarded as a trickster figure who inspires mischief and mayhem. Despite being recognized as the "creator" of life, one of Raven's stories portrays him as a cunning and avaricious character who teaches life lessons while operating primarily for his own gain. The Native American tribes were thankful that Raven held the key that allowed them to access many of life's treasures. They also understood that Raven was acting solely in his own self-interest and not for the benefit of humanity or anything else. Therefore, even though Native Americans are appreciative of what Raven has given them, they also understand that Raven is unreliable and more self-centered than altruistic. The piece shows the raven in a flying position with its wings down. You can see a section of yellow cedar in the middle of the raven's wing, while the rest shows colors of black, red and green. The piece shows great attention to detail in the carving with little to no wear present, and no signs of obvious damage. The piece measures 11 1/8" L x 23 3/8" W.
