Included in this lot is an Amazon Amahuaca Indian Bow and Arrows, circa late 20th century. The Amahuaca or Amhuaca are indigenous peoples of the southeastern Amazon Basin in Peru and Brazil. The primary source of animal protein is hunting, and the forests of the region are well stocked with game. Meat is an important part of the Amahuaca. The primary weapon used by the Amahuaca for hunting and fishing is the bow and arrow. Arrows with forged barbed tips have replaced traditional bone, wood, and stone tips, the metal acquired through bartering along modern river towns and scavenging from garbage dumps. Bird feathers provide the fletching, attached with plant fibers and tree resin for binding. The metal tips are barbed, the shafts palm cane. The bow is most likely also palm, the bowstring braided palm leaf fiber or pineapple bromeliad plant leaf fiber. Arrows measures 38.5"L, 38"L, and 37"L, bow is 46.5"L. Weight is 8oz.
