The lot features a fine early pattern American Indian pipe tomahawk head with hardwood pewter and horn haft collected from Fort Defiance; Provenance: The collectors grandmother and grandfather were homesteaders in Hesperus, Colorado in the late 1800's where they purchased various artifacts and Navajo rugs from Fort Defiance Trading Post in the 1920-1930’s and later the same family in 1950-1960’s. The club exhibits an early pattern pipe tomahawk head showing a medium size with vase like bowl having a finely crafted adornment on the bowl and eye section. The head is a classic pattern of American Indian heads most commonly used in the late-1700’s to early-1800’s, with this being a much later. The metal shows a chocolate dark coloring with fine details showing nicely with no pitting or obvious oxidation. Tear drop eye. The club is paired with a hardwood solid wood haft which extends past the eye with a clean out plug in place (plug replaced). The end shows a silver pewter lead cap with Steer Horn smoking tip with nice yellowing color. The wood has a pierced hole near the bottom center which would have held a drop. The wood is in very good condition with little wear. The club has an early pattern with nice provenance, but exact age is unknown. Displays beautifully. Measures 25.25-inches long and the head is 7 1/8-inches long by 2.5-inches wide by 1.25-inches deep.
