For your consideration is this unique piece of transportation and engineering history, a salesman sample fifth wheel patented by Anchor Buggy Company. The Anchor Buggy Company manufactured horse drawn carriages in Cincinnati, OH from 1886-1917. The company held a number of patents, including this patented fifth wheel and king bolt. The fifth wheel on a buggy was attached to the front axle and allowed the front wheels to turn. The wheel shape in its design gave it its name, fifth wheel. Anchors Buggy Companies improvement to the design added more stability and durability. Contemporary advertisements claimed that the fifth wheel would have to break in five different places before dropping the carriage and endangering the occupants. This piece is in very good condition and is in many ways a beautiful work of 19th Century engineering art. It measures 9.5" x 9.5" x 4"
