The lot features an original work of art hand painted stretched rawhide drum, painted during the 1996 Charles Marion Russell Auction in Great Falls, Montana by artist Andrew Lyle Knudson. The work shows the side portrait of a Native American Indian, possible Chief Iron Trail of the Oglala Lakota Sioux, one of the Indians who the Buffalo Nickel was modeled after. The drum consists of rawhide wetted and stretched over a bent wood or wood manufactured hoop with rawhide woven ties on the back. The front shows the Native American portrait in black, signed just below A. L. KNUDSON 96 and is surounded by a border showing running Buffalo Bison and a geometric pattern, reminiscent of Plains works. Andrew Lyle Knudson is a North Dakota native. This piece is accompanied with a small note stating it was painted during the Russell Auction in Great Falls in 1996 along with Knudson's card. The piece is well kept with the only apparent blemish being the small tear on one of the ties on the back. Measures overall 13" in diameter by 3.5"D. Total weight of 1 lbs. 2 oz.
