Included are nine (9) examples: "Crandall's Champion" (also known as Crandall's Zigzag, Ric Rac and S-Barb) 1879, "Brinkerhoff Twisted Ribbon" 1879, "Sunderland Kink" 1884, "Glidden's Coils" 1876, "Kelly's Diamond Point" 1868, "Scutt's Arrowplate" 1878, "Frye's Parallel", "Ellwood Spread" 1882, and, "3-Strand Braided Fence Wire" 1870s - 1880s. The invention of barbed wire in the late 19th century transformed the American West by providing an affordable and efficient way to fence property and confine livestock in areas lacking wood or stone. It effectively spelled the end of the open range and shifted the ranching industry toward stock-farming. Over 530 patented styles of wire engineered during the late 19th-century boom of the American West. Patented largely between 1867 and the late 1880s, these variations are generally categorized by the shape of their barbs, the layout of their line strands, or their specific manufacturing purposes. Barbed wire categories include ribbon & flat track, fitted plate and block, and twisted-wire variations. This collection is mounted in a heavy shadow box solid wood frame, reverse has hardware for mounting. Each strand measures between 18" to 20" in length, inside frame edge is slotted for glazing. Frame measures 17"W x 23"K x 1.75"D, collective weight is 6lb, 10oz.
