Presented in this lot is this Antique Boston and Lockport Maritime Nautical Double Block (Pulley), circa 1888 to 1911.
The Boston & Lockport Block Company was a significant player in the maritime and industrial equipment sector of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, providing essential components like pulleys and tackle. It formed in 1887 through the merger of two existing companies: Bagnall and Loud Block Company of Boston, Massachusetts and Penfield Block Company of Lockport, New York. They operated a factory at 210 Market Street in Lockport, New York, which manufactured block and tackle for pulleys used on canal boats and other industrial applications. Many of their products are now sought after by collectors as antique tools. Their products often featured a distinctive "Star Brand" mark.
This double block pulley shows a wonderfully and professionally crafted solid wood and steel construction. It features the Boston & Lockport Block Co. stamped metal "Star Brand" tag attached on one face. A heavy duty hook with inner and outer straps is on one end with the thimble on the opposite end. The heavy duty wood shells, swallows and breech are in nicely preserved condition, normal age related checking noted on wood surfaces. Painted metal surfaces exhibit paint loss, no damage observed. Measures 18.5"L x 6"W x 4.5"D, weight is 12lb, 12oz.
