Included in this lot is a Rectangular Antique Chinese Twisted Wire Hanging Lantern, circa early 1900s. Lined with Chinese character paper and suspended by a small chain and hook. Removable wood candlestick base. Provenance: the Owen D. Mort, Jr. Collection. Owen David Mort was an American engineer who amassed an impressive collection throughout his worldwide travels. His collection has included art, artifacts and other historical items from which he has donated to museums at the University of Utah and Snite Museum of Art, the University of Notre Dame, including African, Afghan, Indian, Mughal, Persian and Far East Asian art and artifacts. Paper lanterns have a rich history and cultural significance, spanning across centuries and continents. These delicate and versatile decorations have been used for everything from lighting to symbolizing hope and happiness. The origins of paper lanterns can be traced back to ancient China, where they were first used during the Han dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD). These early lanterns were made of rice paper and bamboo and were used to light the way during festivals and celebrations. As time passed, paper lanterns became more elaborate and decorative, with designs featuring intricate cutouts and colorful paintings. This basic type of paper lantern is used for illumination, and they are meant to be carried, hung, or mounted on stands. This hanging paper lantern exhibits tears on Chinese character paper, twisted wire basket appears intact. Measures 4"W x 4"L x 10.5"H, weight 1lb.
