Featured in this lot are eight, Antique Exotic sandcast trade bead necklaces. The technique for creating this style of bead started in Ghana during the 16th century. Very fine pieces of crushed glass are held together with a binding material, such as saliva or gum Arabic, and spread over a grass stem or a bottle glass core. After cooking in the oven, the beads are rolled in other small pieces of glass to create patterns or left plain. The beads on these necklaces vary in size, style and colors. Most show a base color of orange / brown and feature accent colors of blue, light blue, red and green. One necklace features large, light blue sand cast trade beads with accents of blue, purple and green streaks. All of the beads are set on a raffia necklace. They show good condition overall with little wear present and no signs of damage noted. The beads set on the necklaces measure from 1/8" L x 1/4" W to 1" L x 1/2" W, while the necklaces measure 13 1/4" L to 12 5/8" L. They have a collective weight of 14 ounces.
