For your consideration in this lot is an antique leather doctor’s bag. The bag is constructed with rich black leather and features a zipper closure, instead of the typical latch. The zipper has a lock on the closed side (no key is provided). The bag shows a simple construction with one interior pocket. The bag shows some apparent wear to the leather on the hard edges of the handles. The bag measures 17 1/2" long, 8 1/2" wide, and 10 1/2" tall (without the additional height of the handles). The 19th century was a time where great advancement in the invention of medical tools occurred to aid doctors in making their diagnosis. Due to the many tools they had, they required a way to be able to carry them around. The black medical bag was a symbol in the community that the person carrying it is a doctor. It was the principle symbol of a doctor, similar to how a stethoscope is the symbol of a doctor today.
