Featured in this lot is a Mid-Century Apache Hand Woven Pictorial Olla. This squat basket features three images, one male, in a sequence around the circumference. Apache Indian baskets are primarily divided into four main forms: Trays, Ollas, Bowls & Burden Baskets. The Olla shape was conducive to storing grain which was its original purpose. Apache Ollas are the most valuable of all Apache baskets. The Apache women in the American Southwest are famed for their coiled basketry. These traditional weavers fashion coiled baskets by arranging two, three or five rods of bundled grass, shoots or shredded fibers in continual spirals, much like coiled pottery. They are made from all-natural fibers, including devil's claw, willow and yucca root. An artist constructs them by wrapping fibers around a central core of plant fiber. Olla baskets were handcrafted in antiquity for water storage and containers for seed and corn. This olla basket is in good overall condition, as the stitching appears tight throughout, and the construction is solid throughout. No marring observed. Measures 5.75"H x 7.75"W diameter, mouth and base are 5.75" diameter each.*
