Featured in this lot is a Mid-Century Apache Hand Woven Polychrome Pictorial Tray Basket. This beautiful curved tray basket features an animal figure resembling a horse in two separate lines, and between them an image that might indicate either water or house. The bottom portion has the image of a hogan, the typical Puebloan dwelling. Apache Indian baskets are primarily divided into four main forms: Trays, Ollas, Bowls & Burden Baskets. Apache Trays range from flat, curved, to bowl shaped. Apache trays with pictorial elements (dogs, horses, and or people) are the most valuable, and if done in a third color, red, generally from yucca root, these can be extremely valuable. Almost all old apache baskets main coloration will be yellow, willow shoots, originally white, over time become oxidized by the sun turning the willow stitches yellow. Apache trays were originally made to winnow grain for food. Traditionally made with natural grasses over a willow rod construction, the rim is fully laced in devil's claw. This tray basket is in very nice overall condition, and the stitching is still tight and construction is solid. No marring observed. Measures 11.25"W diameter approximately.*
