For your consideration is a Vintage Apache Whirling Logs Beaded Leather Tobacco Medicine Pouch, late 19th Century, framed. This late 19th century, early 20th century tobacco medicine pouch features pink and gold coloured seed bead whirling log adornment on Indian tanned leather construction with fringe on the edges and a brass coloured bead uniting the leather drawstring closure straps. Self adornment is important to many Native American tribes, and with the introduction of European trade, hand drilled beads of stone, bone and shell were replaced with glass beads. The seed bead, which is easier to use for intricate designs, became popular in the late 18th century. Massive talent and endless patience are required for beadwork. Native artists favored these tiny beads because they made it easier to create intricate and colorful designs. Beaded jewelry, clothing, pouches, and moccasins quickly dominated the Native American beadwork scene. The tobacco medicine pouch is mounted against a green felt background inside a framed display case. Pouch measures 5" x 5" approximately. Case measures 8.75"W x 9.25"L x 1"D, combined weight is 1lb, 2oz.
