The lot features a fantastic authentic original Arapaho Native American Indian fully beaded sheath and large stag-handled trail knife dating to circa 1880-1890. The sheath shows a Great American Bison Buffalo hide construction with period correct glass trade seed beadwork in a traditional geometric pattern having such colors of red, chalk white, sky padre blue, greasy yellow, cobalt and light green. At the center of the sheath shows a row of old tarnished hand-rolled tin jingle cones danglers. At the base of the bag shows long hand cut fringe of Indian tanned hide and at the top show four hide tie fringe with each showing a brass trade beads and jingle tin cone. The early trade “trail” knife features an old stag horn handle, which is likely Native American-done with a long bowie knife like blade. These larger stag elk antler handled knives were used on the trail by both cowboy and Indians alike. Provenance: From the personal collection of Tom Hardy and noted collector and author Ben Thomson. Overall in very good condition. The sheath measures 10”L x 3”W and including the fringed has a total length of 18.5”. The knife measures 13”L.
