This is a stunning polychrome painted Arapaho Ghost Dance Revival painted shirt from Lakota Sioux John Young Buck of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation from the 20th-century. The shirt exhibits thick tanned hide with sinew sewing with a classic Arapaho-pattern Ghost Dance painted design showing various birds often referred to as "crows and magpies" or peyote waterbirds / water birds (believed by the Arapaho to be messengers to the heavens or the spirit world). The shirt is painted on both sides and shows various spot designs with a fringed bib at the top with hawk trade bells and a painted surface. The underside of the arms and bottom of the shirt has a nice fringe border. The shirt is painted blue with bird and spotted Ghost Dance symbols in white, yellow and red. The back is also painted and shows a large bird figure with Indian hide fringes and tied Turkey Feather framed in the spotted design. The shirt is made in revival of the historic circa 1890 Arapaho Ghost Dance Shirt such as the example in the Museum of Native American History and the Ghost Dance, Arapaho 1890 Shirt from the Chandler-Pohrt Collection and Searle Family. This piece is made and is signed with a symbol by Lakota Sioux John Young Buck (1944-) from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and is from the 20th-century. The shirt has a wood rod with tanned hide strand for displaying. The hide is in good condition and the shirt displays beautifully. Measures overall 65-inches wide and hangs 43-inches.
