This is an amazing beaded stone head dance club of the early reservation period, originating from the Arapaho Native American Indians and dating to circa 1890. The piece shows a stone head club with a parfleche rawhide secured head and covered wood haft. The gaskets are of Indian tanned hide beautifully beaded in a “crazy” multi-color seed bead pattern and ending in a nice, original drop with long fringe of the same beaded pattern. The beadwork is all period correct 19th Century glass trade seed beads. The hide is all Indian tanned Buffalo hide with parfleche rawhide strips of Buffalo hide, as well. This pattern is often referred to as “Salt & Pepper” design, or “Crazy”, and is rarely seen with so many translucent variations. The piece has some slight bead loss and the drop has been modernly restored to preserve the original nature of the piece. The drop is original to the piece. This is truly a wonderful early reservation piece that has been well preserved. Overall, the club measures 16” from the head to end of the handle, with an additional 13.5” long fringed drop. The head is 3.25” x 2” x 1.75”. Total length with the fringe is 29 inches.
