Included in this lot is an Arita Chenghua Mark Imari Bowl, circa Meiji - Taisho era (1880-1920). Provenance: the Owen D. Mort, Jr. Collection. Owen David Mort was an American engineer who amassed an impressive collection throughout his worldwide travels. His collection has included art, artifacts and other historical items from which he has donated to museums at the University of Utah and Snite Museum of Art, the University of Notre Dame including African, Afghan and Asian artifacts. Porcelain with marks imitating Chinese marks of the Ming period, Chenghua reign or "daimin seika nensei" in Japanese, were made at the Arita kiln during the 19th century and possibly both earlier and later. This bowl has an alternating curling lotus plant leaf rim that curls in and out. The interior has lotus plant with white veins design against a dreamy blue and white background, two whole lotus plants with gold gilt, Kanji characters in gold gilt and red colours written, probably a poem. Exterior featured lotus plant stems in gold gilt and white colours on a mint green background. White base foot has two blue interior circles, with Kanji characters. Bowl is in nice condition, rim has chipping marring observed. Measures 11" diameter, 4" deep, 4.25" diameter base foot. 2lb, 14oz approximately.
