Featured in this lot are Antique Whiting & Davis "Flapper" styled metal mesh purses (3), circa 1920s-1930s. Mesh bags are deceptively tough. These purses were made out of the same sort of metal links used in armour. Some people refer to them as armour or armor mesh purses. In the late 1800s, the mediaeval look was all the rage, so chainmail-like coin purses that attached to a chatelaine were stylish accessories for Victorian ladies. Wire or chain mesh purses became a large part of the 'Roaring Twenties', the Art Deco era. One of the purses is a "Princess Mary" style fold-over gold mesh, stamped on inside of mouth frame "Princess Mary" and "Whiting & Davis Co. Mesh Bags"; next one is a painted flat fish-scale style, stamped "Whiting & Davis Co. Mesh Bags REG. US" on the inside of mouth frame; the last is a "Dresden" or "Baby Fine" mesh purse, known as "Baby Fine" because of tiny rings of wire joined together in chain fashion, stamped "Margaret Converse London Ohio" and "Whiting & Davis Co.", "Soldered Mesh", and also, "M. A. C.". Painted images on the last two purses have faded though remnants of the images are faintly visible. Metal paperclip style carrying chains. Some seam separation exhibited. Measurements excluding fringe and chain are 6.5"L x 4"W, 6.25"L x 4.75"W, and, 5.25"L x 3.75"W, combined weight is 375 grams.
