For your consideration is this early 20th century Asmat Tribe spear fishing bow. The Asmat people inhabit the western part of the island of New Guinea. This territory, known as Papua, is the largest and least developed of Indonesia's 27 provinces. 85% of the land area is covered by dense forest and mangrove marsh, with parts of the interior remaining unknown. Approximately 65,000 Asmat live in a huge terrain of mangrove swamps, meandering rivers, and mud that stretches over more than 175 miles along Papua's western coast. This bow is large, and made from a native wood found in Papua New Guinea. The tips show woven straw wraps, possibly used to keep the string on the bow or used as decoration. The bow features six wooden arrows with large, serrated tips, useful for keeping the arrow embedded in the fish or small animal. The arrow tips vary in lengths and show various widths and styles, some showing a slender tip with small serrated edges and others with thicker tips and larger serrated edges. The bow and arrows show good condition overall with wear present from their age and use over the years. No signs of major damage is noted. The bow is missing the draw string. The arrows measure from 39 5/8" L to 52" L, while the bow measures 64 5/8" L x 1 7/16" W. They have a collective weight of 1 pound and 8 ounces.
