This is an impressive, large original bronze of a Native American Warrior titled, “Winds of Autumn” by Austin Barton (1927-2017) dated 1989, signed and numbered #9/30. The artwork is a well-known example of his rustic, nostalgic Western aesthetic. Portrayed is a very muscular Indian warrior holding a bow with both hands while his moccasin covered right foot is standing on a buffalo skull. Draped across his shoulders is a buffalo skin robe and protruding from under the left rear is a quiver of arrows. Around his neck is a concho pendant necklace. His left arm bicep is adorned with a beaded band. Intricate seed bead designs are common in Plains and Plateau tribes. Around his waist is a concho belt immediately above his breechcloth. The handle of his knife can be seen rising above his left hip held in place by his concho belt. Austin Barton (1927–2017) was a highly acclaimed American western sculptor whose highly detailed bronze statues frequently appear at major Southwestern art markets, including prestigious venues like the Santa Fe Art Auction and the Scottsdale Art Auction. Known for capturing the rugged realism of Native American warriors, wildlife, and working cowboys, his works are heavily traded in the international bronze market. This stunning bronze showcases Barton’s deep mastery of lost-wax casting. The visual meaning is found in the highly detailed, lifelike capture of human anatomy in motion or deep thought, which remains highly sought after by collectors of fine Western Americana. Piece is titled, signed and dated behind and in front of the right foot on the skull. Title and artist's name engraved on a brass plaque on the front of the wood base. Bronzes by Austin Barton are highly desirable with some examples exceeding $15,000 at auction, this example being very similar to the Connie Stevens – Austin Barton 1927-2017 example sold by Abell Auction in April 2023 for $10,625. The bronze is in very nice condition, no marring observed. Measures 16"W x 77.5"H, weight is 80lb.
