Featured in this lot is this beautiful 1920-30s cold painted bronze sculpted lamp made in Austria. The method of cold-painting bronze sculptures originated in the Viennese bronze industry, which thrived throughout the Biedermeier era (1815-1848), with sculptures swiftly becoming recognized for their high degree of polish, realistic portrayals of the topics, and amusing designs. While these bronzes were created in a variety of finishes, those embellished with the peculiar cold-painting method stood out as some of the most iconic. Cold-painted bronzes, as the name implies, are beautiful bronze sculptures that have been 'cold-painted' in brilliant colors. Cold-painting is a technique for adorning cast bronzes with numerous coats of unfired (cold) paint. They would represent a wide range of topics, many of which were popular among upper-middle-class clients, such as animals, sensuality, and oriental scenes. This sculpted lamp shows a beautiful sewn lamp shade with geometric / floral designs in colors of pink, gold, lilac, gray, red, black and beige. Hanging from the edge of the lampshade are beaded strands showing colors of light brown, clear and black. The lamp shows an older man talking to a woman as he goes to put his arms around her. They were once painted with vibrant colors but they have since worn off from its age. Bronze coloring can still be seen on the woman and the lamp base. The bottom of the lamp is marked reading, "Austria". Adorning the top of the sewn lampshade is a Turkish half-moon, showing the Turkish influence from when Turkish Kosovars came to Austria when Kosovo was still part of Yugoslavia. The ethnic Turkish minority joined other Yugoslav citizens (i.e. Albanians, Bosnians, Serbs etc.) in migrating as "guest workers" in the 1960s and 1970s and then later brought their family members to Austria too. The piece shows good condition overall with wear present from its age and use over the years, but no signs of major damage is noted. It measures 4 1/2" L x 6 5/8" W x 13 1/4" H and weighs 3 pounds and 8 ounces. The lamp is in working condition.
