Featured in this lot is a Baluchi Rug, circa 1930's. Baluchi rug, Baluchi also spelled Baloochi, or Beluchi or Balochi, is a floor covering woven by the nomad Baloch people living in the area between the borders of Pakistan, Afghanistan and eastern Iran. This is why Baluchi rugs are said to be a mixture of three different regions. Where they're sold, however, gives them their label. If a Baluchi is sold in Iran, it's a Persian rug; Sold in Afghanistan, it's known as a Herat product. The patterns in these rugs are highly varied, many consisting of repeating motifs, diagonally arranged across the field, using geometrical motifs consisting of hexagons, rectangles, and triangles to create an amazing visual effect. Some present a maze of intricate latch-hooked forms. These rugs were originally made as prayer rugs, area carpets for serving food and sometimes as animal covers or furnishings. The materials commonly used in the Baluchi rugs are cotton, wool, and occasionally goat or camel hairs. The piles normally consisted of wool though silk was sometimes added to make these rugs luxurious and expensive. In older pieces, the wraps were made of wool while the wefts were lighter in color. In the newer pieces, the wefts are a brownish tone which was sometimes found to be cotton. Similar to most Persian rugs, these Baluchi rugs are woven with asymmetrical knots. Each rug has a knot count of over 100 knots per square inches. The colors used in these antique rugs were dark tones of red, brown, blue, purple and ivory. All the Baluchi rugs have a heavy use of black outlines and black shades making the original shades of colors used even darker. One of the unique characteristics of Baluchi rugs is the repetition of a singular pattern all over the rugs. This rug would go well both as a tapestry, as well as a floor mat, filling up the gap of non-decorated space in a home, thereby making any environment a bit more warm and cozy while adding a little antiquity. The condition of this Baluch rug is good overall with no obvious signs of damage, measuring 39'L x 17"W.*
