Available for your consideration in this lot is a set of fetish carvings, hand made of septarian nodule. The polished carvings depict a simplistic bear and buffalo. Septarian Nodule is a fossil formed from the Cretaceous period of about 50 - 70 million years ago, between what is now the Gulf of Mexico and Southern Utah. The fossil is composed of decomposing sea life, killed by volcanic eruption, the fossilized creatures bonded with sediment around them, and when the ocean water receded, the organic material compressed, leaving the fossils trapped in calcite. The carvings show good condition, with no apparent cracking. The bear is slightly larger, and measures 3 5/8" long, 2 5/8" tall, and 1" thick.
