Beautiful Kiowa Painted Hide Medicine Shield

The lot features a beautiful, painted hide over bent wood medicine shield / war shield attributed to the Kiowa of the Southern Plains of Texas showing nice age. The shield exhibits wetted and bent tree branch frame with wetted and stretched Indian tanned hide, noted by a previous collector as Buffalo / Bison hide. The shield shows a polychrome painted surface with two rows of painted border lines, yellow ochre background with red ochre spot at the center. There is some hair drops, two turkey feathers and three black bear claws tied on as well. The shield also shows two solid brass trade hawk bells on either side and some Indian tanned hide fringes atop. The back shows an arm strap and tied ban holding the hide together. Attractive shield from a collection out of Southern California. Good condition. The shield shows signs of being preserved by a previous collector. Measures overall 16.5-inches across. TURKEY FEATHERS NOT EAGLE.
