This lot is the framed print, "Belle Ringer", by pin-up artist Gil Elvgren, an American painter of pin-up girls, advertising, and illustration. He is best known for his pin-up paintings for Brown & Bigelow. In 1937, Gil began painting calendar pin-ups for Louis F. Dow, one of America's leading publishing companies, during which time he created about 60 works on 28 × 22-inch canvas and distinguished them by a printed signature. Many of his pin-ups were reproduced as nose art on military aircraft during World War II. Around 1944, Gil was approached by Brown and Bigelow, a firm that still dominates the field in producing calendars and advertising specialties. Among the models Elvgren painted were Myrna Hansen, Donna Reed, Barbara Hale, Arlene Dahl, Lola Albright, and Kim Novak. "Belle Ringer" was applied as nose art on a number of US Army Air Corps B-24 bombers during WW2. The print is in a gold gilt wood frame and double matted. There is slight scuffing on frame and slight foxing noted on the print. It measures 19.75" H x 15.75" W.
