For your consideration is a Signed Limited First Edition of "The Shield Mares" by Ben K. Green, 1967, publisher Encino Press, Illustrated slipcase. Often considered his best work, this is the story of two specific horses with a distinctive shield brand and notes their exceptional physical features—such as their withers, backs, and intelligence—despite showing signs of abuse. As a lifelong horseman and veterinarian, his "keen eye" leads him to investigate where these superior animals came from and why they were so rare. Ben K. Green (1912-1974) was an author who wrote about horses and the post-World War I American West. His books consist of anecdotes drawn from his own experiences in the Southwestern United States. He was born in Cumby, Texas and raised in Weatherford, Texas. The mottled tan cloth bound illustrated hardcover is in very nice condition, illustrated slipcase is in nice overall condition. Intact pages are clean and bright. Overall measurement is 7.25"W x 9.375"L x .5"D, combined weight is 14oz.
