This is an original Ben Nighthorse Campbell (Cheyenne, 1933- ) circa 1970’s sterling silver Eagle claw cuff set with branch coral and turquoise ex-Denver Art Museum collection. The sterling silver bracelet is hand signed / etched NIGHTHORSE with a his pictographic mark on the bottom. The bracelet shows a unique shape, that Nighthorse created and is known for, a claw shape with a single band on one side and three on the other, similar to the talon claw of an Eagle. The entire bracelet is set with undyed branch Coral with a deep red coloring. At the top is a flower design with sterling silver pedals and at the center a round cabochon of original untreated rare Sleeping Beauty Turquoise. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (born in 1933) is an noted Cheyenne artist and politician who represented Colorado in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1987-1993 and was a U.S. Senator from Colorado from 1993-2005. During his time in office, he was the only Native American serving in Congress. He serves as one of 44 members of the Council of Chiefs of the Northern Cheyenne Indian Tribe. In Herman Viola’s book, Ben Nighthorse Campbell: An American Warrior, Campbell recounts learning to make jewelry from his father and flattening silver dollars on train tracks for materials. He made jewelry under his Nighthorse name and in the 1970’s was included in a feature article in Arizona Highways magazine about Native artists experimenting in the “new look” of Indian jewelry. This piece was handmade by Ben Nighthorse Campbell, new pieces are offered from Sorrel Sky which are only stamped Nighthorse with more basic silver and stone work which sell for $6,500 (with this being a much more rare and collectible piece). Provenance: The piece was created for an exhibit at the Denver Art Museum and dates to the circa 1970’s. The bracelet measures 6.5” inside dimension wrist size which includes the 1.25”W opening, box measurements of 3”W by 2.5”D by 2 3/8”H. Total weight of 80.4 grams.
